How to Hang Neon Sign on Wall Without Nails

Plenty of people love the idea of having their own indoor neon sign. But you might not want to hammer a whole bunch of nails into the wall to hang it up. Perhaps you’re renting, for instance, and don’t want to get in conflict with your landlord. Or maybe you don’t want the hassle of patching the holes in the future.

Whatever your reasoning, this guide will show you how to hang neon sign designs without nails or screws.

How to Hang Neon Sign on Wall Without Nails

How to Hang Neon Sign with Command Strips

As long as your neon sign isn’t too heavy, one of the simplest ways to hang it is with Command strips. These sticky little pads will adhere to both your sign and the wall itself, holding the sign firmly in place until you’re ready to take it down. Here’s how to hang neon sign decor with the strips:

  1. Find a spot on the wall where you want to hang your neon sign.
  2. Peel away the adhesive layer on one side of the streps and stick them to the back of the sign. Make sure you use enough strips to support the full weight of the sign.
  3. Peel away the second adhesive layer and then press your sign in place against the wall. Ensure you’ve got it in just the right place before sticking it down.

This method is quick and easy, and the strips are specially designed to not damage the walls or leave any unpleasant residue behind. The only downsides are that it won’t work with very big, heavy signs, and you have to get the placement just right – if you stick your sign at an odd angle or want to reposition it later on, you might need a new set of strips.

When you remove the strips, they may take off the top layer of paint with them, so you may need to repaint it afterwards.

How to Hang Neon Sign with Command Hooks

This method is more or less the same as the previous one, but it uses Command hooks instead of strips. Hooks may be better for holding slightly heavier signs, and they’re also useful if your sign has a backing board with a few holes already drilled in it.

  1. Hold your sign against the wall and use a pencil to mark out the spots where the hooks need to go.
  2. Peel away the adhesive layer on the back of your hooks and press them firmly onto the wall on the marked spots.
  3. Hook your sign in place and power it up.

Just like with Command strips, hooks are straightforward to work with and shouldn’t damage the walls. You’ll just need to check the weight of your sign beforehand and make sure the hooks are strong enough to support it. Also, check if the sign has holes for hooks or nails to see which type or size of hook to buy.

How to Hang Neon Signs on Wire

You might also decide to suspend your neon sign on wires. Metal wire or even fishing line can be used for this, although it may still involve some drilling into the ceiling to secure the wire in place.

If you don’t mind drilling the ceiling, or if you already have some existing hooks or mounts to secure the wire in place, this is a fine method to pick. However, it does require a certain degree of physical effort, along with a ladder, so it’s important to take care during the installation.

  1. Measure your sign to determine how far apart to drill the holes and install the mounts.
  2. Climb your ladder and mark the mount installation points on the ceiling. Make sure to position them close to the wall, to give the effect that your sign is hanging against the wall
  3. Drill the holes into the ceiling for the mounts.
  4. Place the mounts and secure them in place.
  5. Feed your wire or fishing line through the mounts and tie or secure it.
  6. Place the neon sign into the suspension hoops.

If you desperately don’t want to drill at all, you could also tie a fishing line around the corners of the sign and then secure the fishing line in place using pre-existing nails, thumbtacks or even tie it around heavy pieces of furniture. Since the wire or line is so thin, it’ll barely be noticeable, making it seem almost like your sign is floating in mid-air.

How to Hang Neon Signs with Magnets or Suction Cups

Yet another approach for hanging neon lights without nails or drilling is to use magnets or suction cups. You can stick some magnets or cups onto the back of your sign and then adhere it to the wall, like so:

  1. Affix your magnets or suction cups to the rear of the sign – this works best on signs with their own acrylic backing boards.
  2. Push the sign against a window if using suction cups, or onto a metal surface if working with magnets.
  3. Take care when letting go of your sign to ensure it won’t fall.

This method should work with very lightweight signs, but is still a bit risky. Suction cups, in particular, may eventually lose their stickiness and peel away, so you have to be extra cautious.
